Howard County Tax Sale Coming in October

Posted by: Betty | Comments (0)

0728auctionFinally, Howard County has scheduled a Real Property Tax Sale for October 15! It’s been several years since the last sale, so there are lots of properties with delinquent taxes and assessments.

Before getting into this, keep in mind…

A Tax Sale is NOT the same as the monthly Sheriff’s Sales!

There is are big differences between the two! One of the biggest differences is what you own at the end of the sale if you have the winning bid. If your bid wins  at a Sheriff’s Sale, you own a house. If your bid wins at a Tax Sale, you own a piece of paper called a Tax Sale Certificate.

For more information about how these two sales are different, see Howard County Sheriff Sales vs Tax Sales. There’s even a chart you can enlarge and print.

Now back to the Howard County Tax Sale scheduled for October 15… I didn’t find anything on the Howard County website, so what follows is from the Legal Notice in the Kokomo Tribune (Sept. 3).

It appears that SRI Incorporated, an auction company, is handling the sale or at least registration for the sale. It seems there are 872 properties slated for the tax sale. You can find a list of all properties by parcel number by going to the Delinquent Properties Index. Choose Howard County in the first drop-down menu and tax year 2009 in the second one. (I don’t think this is a very user-friendly way of displaying the properties, but they didn’t asked me!)

You can also register for the Howard County Tax Sale and all other tax sales in the state that SRI serves by visiting Tax Sale Registration. Be Warned! This page is terrible! The alignment is totally messed-up!

If and when the Howard County website has information about the Tax Sale, I will try to update this information.

tax-reformIs the Indiana property tax system broken?

Ask anyone who saw their property taxes spike! You will hear a very loud and clear YES!

Property taxes are used to fund local government and its services – schools, fire protection, police, roads, libraries, etc. These taxes are based on two main factors: 1) the assessed value of a home and 2) the tax rate.

But why the huge rise in property taxes? Several events came together to create the “perfect storm” in the property tax arena. Read More→

If you own property in Howard County, Indiana, you know what has happened with your property taxes! Up, up and away!

If you rent in Kokomo or any place in Howard County, you may not pay much attention to property taxes – but if your montly rent has increased lately, chances are the increase is due to higher property taxes.

Last Spring when we received our property tax bills, most of us saw a pretty substantial increase in our taxes. Community members (builders, property owners, realtors, local government officials, etc.) made a trip to the state capital to voice our concerns to the governor and others at the state level.
