Kokomo Property Owners – Fraud Warning

By Betty

document-signatureKokomo Home Owners – Kokomo Property Owners

As if our worries about unemployment and the local economy aren’t enough, now we find out Kokomo and Howard County property owners could have their property “quit claimed” away from them!

According to a Kokomo Tribune interview with Linda Koontz, Howard County Recorder, crooks in other parts of the state are forging quit claim deeds. These quit claim deeds transfer ownership of a property. Once they transfer ownership, they try to get a mortgage  on the property.

Koontz hasn’t seen any of this happening in Howard County – YET! But as a pre-caution, the recorder’s office is providing a service to Howard County property owners. You can register your name at www.propertyfraudalert.com. If and when a deed is recorded on your property, you will be notified. If you sold the property, no problem. If you didn’t sell it, notify your local law enforcement agency and contact local banks to see if someone is trying to get a mortgage on your property. (There is more information about all of this on the Property Fraud Alert website.)

I just registered both my name and my husband’s name. It was very simple! For each person, all you do is enter your first and last name and how you want to be contacted. I chose email, so I had to enter my email address. (You can choose to be notified by phone instead of email.)

According to the Tribune article, property owners who don’t have access to the internet can contact the Recorder’s Office for assistance. That phone number is: 765-456-2210
