Mind Your “Dos and Don’ts” At Open Kokomo Homes
It doesn’t matter whether you are seriously looking for a home or just curious about what’s for sale in the Kokomo area, an open house can be a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon. But, before you head out for an afternoon of home looking, you really need to know the dos and don’ts of open houses.
- DO talk to the real estate agent. The real estate agent is there to answer your questions about the home, the neighborhood and the Kokomo area in general. Ask about the neighborhood amenities, schools, shopping, etc.
- DO follow reasonable requests. Please sign the guest register and give honest feedback about the house if you are asked. If you are asked to stay out of a particular room, please honor the request. Pay attention to the open house time frame – arrive after the beginning time and leave before the ending time.
- DO walk around the home. The whole point of an open house is to give you a chance to see inside available homes for sale. You do not need permission to check out the bedrooms, bathrooms, closets or the garage. As you walk through the home, make notes about what you like and don’t like.
- DON’T look in medicine cabinets or drawers. It’s inappropriate to look through the homeowner’s personal belongings. You have no reason to look at anything other than room layouts and closet sizes. (Put yourself in the owner’s shoes—would you want people rummaging through your underware drawer or medicine cabinet?)
- DON’T try to negotiate at the open house. This is not the time to make offers. If you are seriously interested in the home, talk to the agent or call your real estate agent to arrange a time after the open house is over to write an offer.
- DON’T take anything from the home. The homeowner is taking a great risk in letting strangers walk through their home. Respect their home and property.
